When these six books were published recently in one book and at a very good price, they called to me again Reece is the first book in the series What the series seems to be based on is The Manificent Seven only with wonderful romances as the main focus.Reece is the undeclared leader of this group of six former confederate soldiers They are all haunted by one thing or another and after the War of the States, they ve banded together as kind of a vigilantly group for hire Mary, the heroine of this [...]

This book was a fast, light read and a good introduction to the town of Rock Creek, and the six men who are hired to save it Although I thought the men, for all of their issues, could have had much deeper characterization, it didn t hinder the story that much.Mary McKendrick is used to managing She lives alone in Texas, she s never had a family or friends to look out for her, and all she wants is to make a home of Rock Creek, Texas, where she is the schoolteacher Even if it is full of women chil [...]

luctant heroesI actually don t read Western romances, so it was a huge surprise to me as to how much I enjoyed Reese The series tells the stories of six crack confederate soldiers, special forces, bound by their experiences, in the post war years It hints at their secrets and their nightmares They have vowed that when one calls the others will come Reese s is their reluctant leader. This first in the series captured my attention, and against my normal inclinations in reading material, after this [...]

This is the kind of Western romance my Gram loves, that is not an insult she reads some great books. The story is kind of loose in spots, it could have a tighter construction It is predictable, it you read a lot of this genre Still it was entertaining with a few intriguing twists I adore the dynamic between the two leads It was a delight watching Mary and Reese fall in love. The love happens kind of quick Perhaps I should have said fall in liking I have no doubt the emotions will grow, but it is e [...]

This was my first historical western romance penned by Lori Handeland and it was an excellent way to introduce me to her work in this genre.

And now for something COMPLETELY different Yes, this book is out of character for me, but I like Lori Handeland, and since I received a free copy I felt obligated to read it and write a review I m keeping the fact that it is a western romance in mind, and judging it accordingly.I don t know from western tropes, but I do know the standard romance tropes, and Handeland hits them all Mary is a spinster schoolmarm who is considered too plain and too outspoken to ever be attractive to any man in fact [...]

I first read this book years ago and this year decided to do some rereads of favorite historical western books The Rock Creek Six series was one of the first ones added to my to be reread list The 2nd read was just as good, if not better than the first I loved watching Mary find the courage to track down Reese and convince him that her everything was worth it Then when the hired guns arrive in Rock Creek and do what hired guns do Better watch out Lori Handeland and Linda Devlin did an excellent [...]

I read The Rock Creek series as each book was published in the early 2000s If I remember correctly, they were some of the first American Western romances that I had read and, for the most part, I enjoyed them.Reese is probably my least favorite but it is necessary to read his story because of the background Ms Handeland gives you regarding the other characters Sullivan, Rico, Jed, Nate and Cash And what influenced Reese and formed his mindset.I would give two stars for the romance because it was [...]

4 My Grandma Would Love It Stars Ok this was straight corny and for virgin ears lol I loved it Virgin Mary hires Reese to get rid of the gang of bad guys trying to run everyone out of Rock Creek Reese comes back to town with his crew of 5 men.A Drunk sniper A Knife throwing kid A Sneaky half breed A Cursing Irishman A Slick mouthed, gun slinging gambler I loved all of these men The town is full of cowards and wants nothing to do with these six men Except Mary and her friend Josephine It takes so [...]

I bought you once Lori does it again Different from her norm, but as exciting as the rest This western is a great addition to your reading list Good story line including a rugged and sexy main male character and a self sufficient female that not only starts the story line but finishes it as well I can t wait to read the rest of this series after such a fantastic beginning

I love the story of this book I am on book 3 of the series The characters are wonderful and really appeal to me I laughed out loud many times during the book.My one gripe and caveat is the graphic sex scenes WHY WHY WHY So be prepared for a wonderful story that is really engaging, but be prepared to skip pages to keep it clean for yourself.

Reese is the first book in the Rock Creek 6 series by Lori Handeland I have read other romance from Handeland, but this is my first historical and non paranormal romance of hers that I have read I read and enjoyed most of her Nightcreature series before I started recording and blogging my reviews Six elite Confederate soldiers band together after the War Between the States, hiring out their guns to protect lawless towns Violence is all they know, until they make their way to Rock Creek, Texas Ma [...]

Mary and ReeseThe Civil War and its aftermath left many men, women, and children with memories that just could not be forgotten Such is the case when Mary travels to Dallas, Texas, to hire a group of ex Confederate soldiers now turned protectors of ones less fortunate Reese is struck from the time he sets eyes on Mary She tells him that she comes from a small town that is being terrorized by a Comanche named El Diablo and his men Reese accepts and his five men follow him and Mary to Rock Creek T [...]

Lovely and light, this romance deserves the name The hero feels genuine, likable yet tough The heroine is someone I can identify with Which is, after all, one of the reasons I read romances I gave this story full marks because I found myself engaged enough to care about the people, all of the people, and how they reacted to the conflict There are so many mediocre books, and quite a few disgusting ones that mangle the language or substitute sex for a story It is wholly refreshing to find a writer [...]

I give this book 3.5 stars The story of a man, Reese, damaged by the horrors of the Civil War He and 5 other men he fought with have combined to help a young woman school teacher, Mary, fight to save her town from being invaded by bandits She falls in love with Reese and the feeling is mutual but he is too damaged to believe he deserves a normal life with a wife and family After he recovers from being shot he walks away from her only to discover the answer he is seeking She has a revelation of h [...]

Very good story The characters and story were well developed It was just a little boring in some parts Especially Mary I understood her need to control everything, but just found it boring hearing about every little thing She definitely was quite naive I actually loved the 6 and will probably read books in this series I suspect I will hear about Reese and Mary in the other books Which I would enjoy I do recommend this book A great start to the series.

I REALLY liked this story I loved that the relationship between Reese and Mary wasn t rushed I loved that Mary was self sufficient and a bit of a badass Even though Reese s self loathing act is overdone, I still really liked his character Overall, I really enjoyed the chemistry between the protagonists and was really pleased that the story took its time and didn t get overly ridiculous like many other historical fiction romances do.

There was something intrinsically good hearted about this book The characters were connected to each other by friendship and other feelings, there was a commendable loyalty to self and ideals, and a thoughtful acceptance of how people get to where they are esp through hardship and distress The basic premise isn t deep but the execution somehow pulls you in I liked it a great deal, probably than the sum of its parts but I found myself charmed despite some of the themes.

Reese, the teacherReese was the leader of the band of misfits hired to did the town of an old Indian and his gang of bullys Mary hired him a d his gang for twenty five dollars each to protect the town Along the way they fell in love but my then, she had fallen in love and convinced he that he wasn t the lost person that he thought he was Excellent writing It kept my interest through the entire book ON TO BOOK TWO SULLIVAN The Irish Indian

    Elizabeth
StrongThis novel starts with a believable strong woman There are things she does that a woman would not have been able to do at the time, but none the less this novel caught me and entrenched me deep into the story I loved it I was not emotionally engrossed, but sometimes a read where the mind is engaged is all that s needed I d love to read the others in the series and learn where these men end up and where their stories go

    Nancy Hammons
There were a couple of swear words, nothing too bad But I was getting a little tired of Mary thinking Silly old maid so I flipped to the back to find out how it ended and it was clear there would be sex coming up, I flipped about eight pages I m not sure if I m going to read the rest of the books.

The writing and story have to be really good for me to give a western romance 4 stars, and this one is It was easy to relate to the characters, the action flowed, and the romance grew It might read a tad formulaic, but it hits all the high notes of a good romance with enough suspense to keep you wondering A nice ending with a good lead in to the next in the series.

Love the cover Found it for free I do occasionally read a good Western romance, this would so be included in that group a quick fun read Not weighted down by sadness set in Rock Creek, Texas Well developed characters, well thought out plot a story that is easy to follow and is over and done with so quickly where you wonder where the time went Love a good read like this.

I was recommended to this from an author friend of mine This was actually a really good read I could not put it down I have even already downloaded book 2 I want to see what happens with the other 5 guys.

    Sandie Parrish
ReeseThis is a very well written story of a gunman and a schoolteacher in the years after the Civil War It is not so much their story as the story of how war affects the minds and the bodies of all involved in the war from the soldiers to the families Please read and enjoy

    Karen
Reese is hire by the school teacher in Rock Creek to scare off El Diablo Mary is naive and doesn t realize that Reese and his men will have to kill them off, not scare them away His men include the silent Sullivan, the young knife wielder, Rico, Cash, a sniper along with Jed and Nate.

    Tiffany
If you enjoy romance novels set out west then I highly recommend this book I can t wait to get my hands on the rest of this series
