Josh Devlin has left his confining, mapped out future for the lure of the road So far, it s not really working out that well First he lands in a homeless shelter in the middle of an icy December, and then he runs into Alice, a teenage runaway hiding in a nearby boxcar Alice has amnesia and, it turns out, a truckload of troubles following her Focusing his missing sense of purpose on helping her even if it s against her will , Josh is determined to help her regain her memory and get to the bottom [...]

This is a gritty crime thriller set mainly in the Mississippi Delta, with lots of colourful characters Each of them seem to have been failures at some stage of their life and just seem to fighting their way through from day to day They all have a story to tell To me, I like to be able to get into a book within the first chapter and immerse myself into the lives of everyone in the book The problem for me was that I just couldn t picture the characters and felt that the author had not for me anywa [...]

As someone who has spent time in and around Memphis, and as a John Grisham fan, I was curious how Frome would handle the mid south and its quirky characters I was pleasantly surprised by his command of the geography and personalities in his story, and by his ability to capture the shadowy world of Beale Street and its surroundings, blues musicians and all I found myself rereading that portion just to immerse myself in the sleaze and lingo of the place The ghosts of Elvis and W.C Handy permeate e [...]

Forgot to add this book to my list while I was reading it, but did want to review it now that I m done.Twilight of the Drifter is a multi layered mystery with genuine Southern overtones The author does a great job of infusing the story with authentic dialogue and accurate description of the Mississippi Delta area, and you can tell he has done his research Josh Devlin, the main male character is a convincing outsider reacting to the other characters as he works on getting to the bottom of the mys [...]

In this novel, Shelly Frome has captured the mood, the feel and the land of the American South, as experienced by an outsider who is just drifting through Frome s taken the Mississppi landscape with all of its ghosts, and woven it into a mystery backed by a bluesy soundtrack His cast of characters includes a well to do drifter who is trying to find himself on the road, a trio of good ol boys, a haunted bluesman and a 14 year old runaway who is equal parts Holden Caulfield, Orphan Annie and Matti [...]

What I enjoyed most about this mystery novel, Twilight of the Drifter by Shelly Frome was the dialogue that came out of the characters mouth s You see things from Josh Devlin s eyes as he protects the fourteen year old Alice as she experiences danger I found it a thoroughly entertaining read Very convincing dialogue, layer upon layer of edgy Southern sleazy characters, raises questions and ultimately your temperature as you careen through the book If you are looking for a good time read you won [...]

Judging from all the 5 star reviews on , I can honestly say the one or two 3 star reviews on have certainly missed the boat and failed to pick up the resonance of this crime and blues odyssey As just one case in point, readers can check out Peter Lefcourt s review a noted Hollywood author and award winning screenwriter who never wanted the novel to end.

Thought provoking and gritty The story of Josh Devlin is catchy in its tragic truth because of the failings of his own life and the characters he meets Mr Frome takes us on compelling journey and a good solid read with language and melodies that fit the characters and places Looking forward to reading by this author.

This is a thoughtful, careful study of the south in a way that makes a time and a place come alive One thing I liked especially about it is the dialogue and the pacing of the narrative Frome is writing from deep understanding and with a skill that is enviable A good mystery from a good writer.

Twilight of the Drifter is a delicious gumbo of mystery, blues, and unreconstructed Southern politics.

This book had interesting plot possibilities, but I did not feel that either the plot or the characters were well developed And there were just too many coincidences in the story.
