    I completed this piece of required reading for an upcoming trip to Cuba The introduction was quite valuable as a review of the history of the country as it relates to its literature My reaction to the stories varied Many featured brutality or a sort of gray existence others reflected hope in spite of limited resources I especially liked one of the last stories, in which the author described the Cuban people in a series of contradictory characteristics.

    I was a little underwhelmed by this book which was on my reading list for an upcoming trip to Cuba It did give me some feel for the country, and there were certain recurring themes such as Santeria, fatalism, decay, family connections, importance of dreams, and magical realism But most of the works in this anthology were excerpts from longer works, and often hard to understand in such a small dose I think I liked better those works that were written by Cuban writers now in exile elsewhere, and t [...]
