As a female South Asian American living in the Arabian Gulf, Mohana is ideally placed to open our minds to the subtle prejudices that help us simplify our complex world From Dunes to Dior is an engaging view of how it feels to live in one of the fastest changing countries in the world Mohana describes Qatar as one the smallest and safest countries in the world, an oasis of calm smack dab in the global hotspot of the Middle East Mohana travelled to Qatar a country the size of the U.S state of Con [...]

I was provided with a free copy of this book as part of the blog tour Also posted on my blog, Rinn Reads.I am an archaeology graduate All I know of Qatar is that a lot of people I ve met on excavations have worked out there and that is the shameful extent of my knowledge I felt that I really should know about the country, since there seems to be a lot of archaeology going on there hence my choice of reading From Dunes to Dior over Love Comes Later, plus the fact that I really enjoy memoirs Moha [...]

An insider outsider account of expat life in Doha Qatar A very quick read, and probably better than most how to books available I was a bit confused by the format and style, though.

This is cutting it rather close, but sometimes spur of the moment trips are a good thing While mine only took me to the other side of town today, I have friends who are on a Mediterranean adventure So, while I haven t a whole lot of time to get this review posted before the end of the tour in T 4 hours I promise to make it amusing It s been a long week, and some days I wish I really were half way around the world. From Dunes to Dior was probably my favorite of the two books by Mohana Love Comes L [...]

I m not usually the sort who picks up nonfiction unless it s as research for my writing With From Dunes to Dior, however, my attention was captured immediately and I read this insightful travel memoir in just two sittings a real feat for me as of late Mohanalakshmi communicates with her reader in an academic yet conversational tone as she paints a picture of expat life in Qatar, addressing values, fashion, opinions of the West, a friendly people in a striated society Further depth is added by Mo [...]

I m a huge fan of biographies and when I came across this I couldn t wait to get started As I m sure you ve all noticed, I m an information sponge I love to learn about anything, especially other countries and their religions, habits, and way of life.In From Dune to Dior, we re taken on a first hand tour of the country of Qatar, a small country situated in the middle east Normally, just hearing about their daily lives would fascinate me, but in this collection of essays we re given the bonus att [...]

I found this book so interesting that it was hard to put down To read about differences between how we perceive the Middle East and what its really like was fascinating Plus, in trying to dislodge an American stereotype, Mohana also allows those of us from outside the US to compare and contrast our own views of Qatar.I also loved the little touches of humourous situations which crept into the otherwise serious account Sometimes it was amazing to read about how everyday occurances could turn out [...]

This short series of essays on life as a third culture American born in India, raised in the US , who lives in Qatar offers a fascinating insight into an Arab culture mostly demonized by people in the US I loved the author s observations about her life choices and the conflicting expectations of her from other Americans, Americans of diverse ethnography, Asians, and Qatari citizens Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar offers the glimpse into a culture so different from our own, intuitions and understanding t [...]

From Dunes to Dior, a collection of essays by Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar, explores the author s transition from an American culture to that of Qatar The author talks all about how different she is viewed by her own Indian heritage, her American upbringing and what she is seen as in Qatar, where many people who share her same looks are treated differently than the nationals. The author covers everything from fashion to religion to different perceptions of everyone, including herself It is certainly a [...]

really short read, but an ex pat s story of her life in Doha, Qatar I felt some familiarity with it and some of the places mentioned because I was lucky enough to visit there for a few days on my last ship board deployment I would love to go back.
