Perfect for Personal reading, book club read, possible History class read In a nutshell This book was very eye opening for me I ve never considered the after affects of war, and it s children the destruction, hunger, military presence, loss of friends and family, etc This wonderful book follows the life of 4 year old Erich for 10 years as he is affected by World War II, and as he is transported to Ireland with his 3 year old brother Hans as part of Operation Shamrock The brothers are separated a [...]

My friend Padraig the writer says that when you write an historical novel the best way to go about it is to do a lot of research and then forget it and write the story In Hitler and Mars Bars Dianne Ascroft has done just that The book is poignant without sentimentality, gripping without striving for suspense and utterly believable I couldn t put it down.Erich is a 5 year old German orphan sent to Ireland after the second world war on a program arranged by the Irish Red Cross Although traumatized [...]

Here is something which happened in during and after World War II which I have never heard of before Author Dianne Ascroft meticulously immerses herself into the Operation Shamrock legacy and from it is born a fictional character named Erich who invites us into his world and who is so lonely at times that it made my heart break I kept asking myself, how could I not have known about this before Thank you to the author for telling this story which so needs to be heard.

Though Hitler and Mars Bars seemed long in some parts, I thought it was a great book Ascroft brings attention to Operation Shamrock, a program I knew nothing about prior to the story, and instead of simply providing details about the program, she brings it to life through the story of Erich and Hans.Read the full review on Diary of an Eccentric.

The story is seen through the eyes of young Erich, a German refugee brought to Ireland after Word War II as part of Operation Shamrock and the narrative style is a little hard to get to grips with to begin with In the end, it works quite well and the conclusion of story is convincingly realistic I was grateful that it didn t have a faux happy ending.

This was an interesting book about an obscure area of Post WW2 life I had never heard of Operation Shamrock and found the topic fascinating I hope the author writes a sequel and lets us know what happens to the boys.
