Family troubles, school troubles, and money troubles make Bart s life less than ideal Now he s maybe made friends with a cute girl, but unfortunately she s outed him both as being poor and as being able to sing opera, something he only does alone in his bathroom Everyone is looking at him, and he doesn t like it Nor does he like it that his mother is gravely ill and that so many people including his grandmother are seeing through the lies about his home life This book was very hard for me to rea [...]

This starts slow but by the end you re rooting for Bart whose life is not easy but who remains optimistic for the most part Bart lives in public housing with a single mother who can barely care for herself much less him but she loves her son dearly He loves opera, is a bit bullied, and has no real friends at school until his classmate Ada decides to befriend him There are some issues in the book that may be uncomfortable Bart s mother is an alcoholic and, by his description, obese garbage includ [...]

I don t know what it is but European middle grade and YA books are some of my favorites There s some type of sophistication to the language used even when translated and simple style of storytelling that I don t know would have wowed me as much as a younger reader but definitely does as an adult For clarification I don t mean simple as easy or low grade, but the ones I ve read have been shorter than many American ones and successfully tell a story without flourish and 50 pages of detail I love t [...]

A boy named Bart who sings opera His mom is unhealthy at best His living conditions are dangerous And yet is optimism is eternal While attending boxing lessons his mom signed him up for to teach him to defend himself , he also is discovering his passion for opera singing and developing some unconventional friendships A quirky coming of age tale that leaves you feeling a bit bouncy A reminder to focus on the positive and find humor where you can.

realistic fiction batchelder honor I really loved the voice in this book A lovely story about unconditional love between a young boy and his struggling mother set in the context around a school performance where his hidden talent as an opera singer comes to light The book has so many layers and beautiful vignettes about relationships Definitely going to be one of those books that are a winner amongst students.

Cute and transcendent storyThis international mid grade read transcends space with a relatable tale of growing up Issues of poverty, bullying, and drug alcohol abuse are addressed appropriately and give a voice to a necessary narrative in many countries A lovely read featuring a loveable, multi dimensional protagonist and his growing circle of family and friends.

This book won an honor award for the Batchelder Medal for books written in another language and translated into English I m not sure whether I found the translation clunky because I was aware of this but I felt some word choices were too old, too sophisticated for a 13 year old boy and they jarred me out if the story.

Jag gr t och skrattade massvis, den var fenomenal p att dra med en och gripa tag i en Bart, som boken handlar om r en vardagshj lte, han har ofta en god och rlig inst llning till det som h nder ven i de v rsta situationer, det r inspirerande.

I kind of liked this book, I really enjoyed the illustrations mostly I didn t really see a great underlying message being told through the story This book would be greatly used to freshen or help with vocabulary as well as creative thinking.

Loved it Poignant, sad, but triumphant ending when 13 year old Bart conquers his life in a junkie filled Norwegian slum and complete stage fright by singing opera at the middle school spring show.

Not for me All the issues Bart faced didn t resonate with me to a depth that engaged me I would also have a difficult time knowing who to recommend the book to in my current school.
