Would fit nicely into a 3.5 5 rating.Good, straight ahead look at McEnroe and Borg as they came up through the 70s and had their epic matches at Wimbledon and the US Open in 1980.Those two matches are separated by each of their own little tennis biographies Reminded me of a John Feinstein book which is good Lots of great descriptions of their matches, but unless you saw them all, these kinds of books beg for a TV adaptation with some highlights Luckily there kind of is one in McEnroe Borg Fire I [...]

Professional tennis in the 1970s always has been the perfect subject for a book You ve got jet setting athletes, disco, cocaine, short shorts, sideburns and a newly freewheeling attitude about sex How could you go wrong There is a problem, however A lank haired Swede named Bjorn Borg dominated this so called Golden Age of tennis Awed observers called him The Viking God, and while the moniker fit, it wasn t enough to make him interesting It was always his absence his inward focus that emitted no [...]

The best chapters of the book are those describing the way Borg and McEnroe started playing tennis, their vastly different training methods in the juniors and their respective pathways to the professional circuit.

I used this book as a primary source of information for my undergraduate Senior thesis I consulted this book as an in depth, third person account of the 1980 Wimbledon match between Borg and McEnroe Matthew Cronin, tennis journalist, discusses the rise of both players while layering this discussion with a narrative of both the 1980 Wimbledon and U.S Open final matches This is his first book, yet he has written on multiple topics in tennis for various publications To ensure an unbiased account, h [...]

Okay so dude does a good job of pulling from the tennis press of the time Even if it doesn t cite them properly Yes, I care about this, even if I m the only one who does But he also makes a lot of stretched comparisons, possibly to try to make things seem meaningful Like, Woody Hayes and Roman Polanski He also didn t win any points from me when he called Billie Jean King the most influential women s libber of her time I may not have the phrase exactly correct but I know he used the term women s [...]

Being a tennis nut, I couldn t give this book one star but I thought about it The book jumps around constantly and doesn t really have a good flow to it, even though it keeps coming back to the 1980 Wimbledon final A lot of the statements in the book seemed like they were recycled from earlier chapters, which made it feel like I was reading a bunch of magazine articles that had been shoved together I enjoyed learning some tennis history but this book could have been much better if written differ [...]

Really good tennis writing It doesn t hurt that the two main characters are such interesting and compelling characters The writing is great especially the blow by blow tennis commentary A great read if you re a fan.

I interact with this seemingly tireless tennis scribe on Twitter, and his book was put out by my employer, Wiley Publishing, and so I feel like I best get on top of it Soon enough.
