A very timely and solidly researched discussion of the philosophical foundations of polytheism The author draws on an impressive range of knowledge, and I also give him extra points for occasionally adding a bit of dry humour to this serious minded and well written study I found his no nonsense approach very refreshing There s a broad spectrum of topics covered here, and while I am not entirely certain that absolutely all of Greer s arguments will necessarily stand up equally well to scrutiny, t [...]

This book is a mature, scholarly exploration of the spiritual, philosophical and moral legitimacy of polytheism as a spiritual path.Modern Western culture tends to view monotheism as the only truly mature and legitimate form of religiosity, based on the idea that cultures grow out of polytheism to embrace monotheism Greer, a critic of the myth of progress which claims that every new stage of human cultural development is necessarily better than the previous one, systematically builds his case fo [...]

This book is enormously helpful as a beginning resource into the differences between polytheism and monotheism in the areas covered by the topic of philosophy of religion specifically, the ways in which polytheism quite rationally resolves many of the so called problems of religion It is clearly written, and a reference I go back to all the time It creates starting points for all kinds of research and reflection possibilities It should be stated that the book focuses on Neopagan polytheistic rel [...]

This book is fantastic I think everyone should read it I just started reading this book, and it is what people say it is a very scholarly discussion of how polytheism is different from monotheism What he says is the truth but it is not the whole truth. He doesn t seem to be aware of the Pagan Monotheism of classical Rome and Greece Personally I think the recent spate of books on the subject misunderstand classical pagan monotheism But there is evidence that classical pagans did believe that their [...]

I found the first chapter of this book extremely difficult to understand and I could not comprehend its inclusion in the book I gained nothing from the first chapter and, honestly, little from the rest. From the second chapter onwards, I was able to follow the arguments being put forward for polytheism as opposed to monotheism or atheism , but I am not sure I agreed with them Some of the logic appeared circular to me Greer seemed to disprove reasoning used by monotheists and atheists, but, in th [...]

Awful To begin with it s written like a college thesis Secondly, I felt like I was being scammed on something but the twisting of words was so awful I couldn t pin point what exactly the author was being shifty on I wouldn t recommend this one to anyone.

This is the best book on polytheist theology one can read It touches every subject and challenges the common notions of religion in general It s short but it provides a lot of information It s well written and promotes a lot of reflection needed for every pagan today I m looking forward to reading of John Michael Greer s books.

An incredibly forthright and necessary examination of the argument for a polytheistic worldview taking into account the major arguments from mono and a theist views.

In my opinion, this book is a mess.I can only imagine it was written with the expressed purpose of being part of a college courses selected readings It is written in the style of a scientific paper with constant citations, but the information from said citations is rarely than a vague sentence that does not impart the valuable information necessary to complete his arguments. While the style may attempt to be scientific, the tone is clearly conversational His turns of phrase and poorly thought ou [...]

The Neopagan movement has not had much in the way of philosophy Though personal experiences are readily recounted, and rituals shared freely, almost nothing of genuine theology or deep metaphysics has come out of it Leave it to John Michael Greer to be one of the vanguard working to open the field. The importance of this book, though, is not limited to the Neopagan community Those practicing in Gnosticism, Eastern religions, ancestor worship, magic, and Afro Diaspora traditions will find many a s [...]

JMG s main conceit here is to establish the basic coherence of polytheism in a pluralistic society Polytheism is not a descent into theological incoherence, but rather it works, people live it, and it solves problems created by dogmatic insistence on atheism or monotheism I think he makes this pont fairly well, and the book is an entertaining ramble through the weeds of popular arguments about religion, with references to many 20th century books now well down the memory hole for most English spe [...]

If you re looking for a logical, well constructed set of arguments as to why polytheistic faiths are as valid as monotheistic ones, look no further This philosophical work combines some of the better practical logic usage that I ve personally seen in demonstrating the validity of pursuing pagan relgions. Now, I don t have extensive experience reading the philosophy of religion and faith, so this review should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt However, in reading it, I definitely saw that [...]

Bloodless and boring prose wise, unimpressive to this non philosopher thinking in a lot of places yet saying things I mostly agree with, and sometimes helpful to me in my polytheist animist blunderings It s nice to see someone note that monotheism so dominates the modern mind that 99% of writings on religion, pro or con, are completely inapplicable as soon as you imagine than one god, and to see someone argue even as tepidly as this that polytheism is better But I d like a little poetry and st [...]

John Greer s treatise on polytheism is an interesting, but not quite compelling read Focused heavily on the arena of Philosophy, and written at a level that rivals some doctoral theses, it makes for a difficult and tedious read at various points While I am quite sure that there are people who enjoy reading material on this level, it certainly was not what I had hoped for Seemingly, the text is designed to argue a side of a debate of polytheism v monotheism v atheism I literally found myself seek [...]

In brief a compare and contrast study of Abrahamic monotheism, and the developing emergence of a revived European paganism It serves decently to have someone from either tradition better grapple with basic terminology of theological study so as to express one s beliefs The author lays down a basic groundwork of ideas, and then spends the latter half of the book demonstrating why a polytheistic world view is logical, and appropriate to modern experiences, knowledge, and sentiment At some points, [...]

I am not a philosopher So, maybe there are some gaping holes in his thoughts, but I can t find them He has a nice solid argument for the existence of many gods rather than just one omnipotent, omniscient, benevolent godG does go off on a tangent onto one of his favorite subjects the myth of progress It felt like a stretch, but it is a short tangent. This is a academic read than I am used to with Pagan literature, and was a nice change of pace from other authors.

This book is fabulous It not only describes but argues for polytheistic beliefs with eloquence and logic It s refreshing, elegant, and beautiful Amust readfor anyone interested in paganism, polytheism, and the gods.

    An excellent introduction to polytheism.

    Tim Doughty
Greer convincingly argues that if deity exists, it is much likely that they are many rather than one Polytheism is the logical world view.

    Manuel Nunez
An interesting attempt at neo pagan, polytheistic theology.

    Michael Wylde
An eloquent and well researched essay on religious diversity and polytheism, Greer presents his topic clearly and concisely.

John Michael Greer is an engaging and convincing writer His arguments for the validity of polytheism are refreshing and useful
